An honest note before the inventory: Taiwan has no dedicated cookie statute at this time, so the little banner you saw on arrival is this journal's own practice, not a local legal mandate dressed up as one. The journal keeps the practice anyway, because showing your storage choices plainly is simply how this desk prefers to work.
What cookies even are
Cookies are small strings a site asks your browser to keep and send back with each request. Their relatives — local storage entries — stay in your browser until you clear them. Sites use them for session memory, preferences, analytics and tracking; what any given site stores says a great deal about how it behaves.
What this site actually stores
Almost nothing, and all of it stays in your own browser. The site sets no cookies of its own, uses no third-party storage, and runs no analytics — there is no measurement code anywhere in these pages: no gtag, no GA4, no pixels, no session recorders. Everything ever placed on your device by this journal is listed below, and the list is short enough to fit on a napkin.
| Item | Type | Purpose | Duration | Set by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
gwj_consent | localStorage entry | Remembers your cookie-banner choice (Accept or Decline) so the journal does not re-show the notice on every page | Kept until you change it or clear your browser storage | This site, first-party, no expiry timer |
There are no other storage items: no session cookies, no advertising identifiers, no third-party cookies, no analytics storage. The fonts and images you load are served from this site's own files, so even your reading leaves no trace on anyone else's servers.
What your choice actually changes
Because the site runs no analytics or third-party technologies at all, Accept and Decline lead to identical functionality in every respect: the same pages, the same articles, the same form, the same speed. The point of the choice is forward-looking honesty — if the journal ever adopted a nonessential technology, the stored preference would govern it, and anything nonessential would remain blocked until you accepted it. Rejecting the banner changes nothing about how the site works today, which is the honest consequence of having nothing to switch off.
Changing or withdrawing your choice
Two routes, both quick. The footer of every page carries a Cookie preferences button that re-opens the banner, letting you switch Accept to Decline or the reverse in one click. Or clear the gwj_consent entry (and everything else this site stored, which is only that entry) through your browser's site-data settings — the banner will simply appear again on your next visit, and nothing else about the site will have changed.
Storage on this site never gates reading. If your browser blocks local storage entirely, the banner quietly manages itself: the journal cannot keep a note of your preference, the site works at full function, and the notice may reappear — that is the entire cost.
Where inquiries fit
Messages sent through the inquiry form are not storage in your browser at all — they are form submissions processed at this site's own endpoint, described with their retention periods in the privacy notice. The short version: they are used to reply, kept briefly, and shared with no one.
